How to Downgrade Your iPhone 3G[S] from iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3

My 3G phone is glacially slow with iOS 4. After I get my new phone I'll do a full reset on the 3G...then if it hasn't sped back up I'll downgrade the OS before I pass it down to Alex.
