smartphone not synchronizing exchange calendar :(

I love my smartphone, and what I love most about it is its seamless synchronization with our campus Exchange server—email, calendar, and contacts. Add a phone number to my phone, the contact gets updated on the server and then synchronized with my computer—no wires necessary. Add a meeting to my calendar on the computer, and it shows up on my phone, complete with reminders. Fabulous.

Until last week, when suddenly calendar events stopped synchronizing. My email works just fine—I’m still getting it sent to my phone with no problems. But Calendar events won’t synchronize. If I go into ActiveSync and watch the process, it shows it connecting, shows it seeing that there calendar events to sync, but then the events never make it onto the phone.

I am so so so so sad about this. I depend on my phone to tell me where I need to be an when, and now I can’t trust it.

Our helpdesk, of course, pleads ignorance. I haven’t changed anything on my phone—no new software, no nothing.

Can anyone help? Please?

My experience with ActiveSync is such that eventually it loses its memory for no apparent reason. There's no rhyme or reason for the apparent loss in traction: one day you wake up and it no longer syncs.

My solution has always been to reinstall ActiveSync on the host PC, then resyncing with the device.

Feel free to follow my link home or e-mail me if you need additional guidance. I'm a tech analyst by day. I write about this stuff and explain it to journalists when I'm not publishing, so this is a familiar topic of discussion in my world.

I really enjoyed your blog, BTW. Looking forward to reading more.

Carmi--I'm actually not using any kind of PC as a part of this chain. The phone syncs directly to the Exchange server, using ActiveSync for Windows Mobile 5. So the problem is most likely with the RIT Exchange server, and that means dealing with our IT people :(

Thanks for the suggestion, though, and for the nice words about the blog!

I must have written this when comments were out :)

Since early December Microsoft has pushed out a bunch of updates. I wonder if one of them broke your phone... had a few folks here run into problems with specific software packages when they got back from break and had to applied the waiting patches.

Hmmmm. That sounds very plausible.

I seem to have gotten it to work, finally. It required me to turn off calendar sync on the phone side, run ActiveSync, turn calendar sync back on, and run ActiveSync again. The good news is it now seems to be working. But the bad news is that it took *forever* to do that first sync between the phone and the server (and then my Mac and the server), in large part because it duplicated all my calendar events. So then there was a lengthy process of hand de-duping. :/

It's a Cingular 3125 (the HTC Star Trk), running Windows Mobile 5.
