the book of my enemy

Crooked Timber quotes one of my all-time favorite poems today, Clive James' "The Book of my Enemy has been Remaindered." Here's how it begins:

The book of my enemy has been remaindered And I am pleased.
In vast quantities it has been remaindered
Like a van-load of counterfeit that has been seized
And sits in piles in a police warehouse,
My enemy's much-prized effort sits in piles
In the kind of bookshop where remaindering occurs.

I don't know whether to be delighted or dismayed that I find such enjoyment in this poem.

Does it help any to know that I find it fall-down-funny also?

Unbudgeable turkeys indeed.

Amusing, but perhaps one should look within and examine the consciousness that permits looking upon another as an "enemy."

Now wait. Pubiesse is on record on WB praising a truly villainous aphorism by Junius Martial. Malice with wit, must be at least 30% of humor and 80% or more of satire. The remaindered author is not mentioned by name and is probably gloating that the leaves from the poet's own books are being used to wrap day old fish. (An old joke from Alexander Pope's Dunciad.)

Better such wit than Reality TV.

WB? WB? I have never been to Warner Brothers! But I hear their legal department can be vicious. (Just teasing). And if I seem a little inconsistent, well... a dip into Emerson surely covers that.
