a prayer

I'm not particularly religious, as anyone who knows me is aware.

But I love this prayer, attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

For too much of my life, I believed that where there was injury, it was my job to sow retribution. One of the gifts that recovery has brought into my life is a recognition of how much damage that approach does--to me as well as those around me.

Howdy! If you like this prayer (which I also love), you'll enjoy the drum that appears at the link below. Make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the post to see it.

Sarah McLachlan actually has a vocal version of this prayer. It's kind of rare so if you're interested, I can email you the mp3.

Thanks, Noor!

Wow. What a beautiful rendition of the prayer.

I love Sarah McLachlan, and wish this track were easier to obtain legally. You can't buy the prayer track from iTunes, or from McLachlan's site. The only way I could find to get it (without taking Noor up on her generous offer, which I did) was to buy a $44 Japanese import version of the Surfacing CD from Amazon. Considering that I already own Surfacing, I didn't really want to spend $50 to get an imported version for that one track. :(

I got the track legally by ordering a custom CD single from McLachlan's site. You get a CD with three tracks of your choosing and whatever title you want printed onto it.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to do that.

When I went to the site I looked in the downloads area and didn't see the track, so I gave up. I should have poked around more, apparently!

I give up. I can't find what you describe anywhere on her site. :(

Can you point me to a URL for the custom CD service? I can't even find a single mention of the Prayer track anywhere on her site or the nettwerk store site.

So I went looking and couldn't find it on her site. So I dug through my CD collection and found the site. Lo and behold the company that did the custom cds appears to have gone bust.

Here's an acticle from 1999 about the company, CustomDisc.com, that even mentions McLachlan:

Their domain is for sale: http://www.customdisc.com/

All is not lost, though! I found another means of acquiring it legally. It appears as track 11 on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Radio Sunnydale [SOUNDTRACK]", available from Amazon:

(My comment didn't show up; here's a shorter version.)

You can buy a legal copy thusly:
